TÜV Rheinland to offer Matter 1.0 certification

Global testing house TÜV Rheinland has announced that it is now offering testing and certification for smart home products in accordance with the new Matter communications standard.

TÜV Rheinland said that four of its 18 laboratories worldwide are now setup to test new and existing IoT smart home products for Matter 1.0 criteria such as connectivity, performance and interoperability.

The announcement comes as Samsung announced the availability of Matter functionality via an update to its smart home hub app, SmartThings. The update will allow users to control all Matter-compatible devices from a single application, instead of using multiple apps from different device manufacturers.

UL Solutions also recently confirmed that it has been authorized to test products for certification for the new industry standard.

Matter 1.0 was launched last month by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), an international alliance of more than 550 tech companies including Google, Apple, Amazon and Samsung.

The standard is expected to be supported by more than half of the world’s smart home devices within the next five years.

“Users want intuitive device operation with maximum functionality and performance,” said Lourens Koopmans, senior expert for wireless technologies at TÜV Rheinland.

“In addition, the devices should not only function in a specific smart home system, but should be able to communicate with each other in different systems. Matter harmonizes the different technical and legal country-specific features in a standardized protocol.”
