Uzbekistan latest country to join IEC

Uzbekistan has become the latest country to join the electronics standards agency, the IEC, in a move hailed as “a further step towards global collaboration.”

Under the terms of its membership the Central Asian country will become an IEC associate member setting up an IEC national committee in the country.

The IEC is a member-based organisation and every country that wants to participate in its work has to have a national committee made up of stakeholders in the space of electrotechnical technology in that country.

The national committees nominate experts who come together in the IEC’s various working groups and technical committees to create its standards.

“We are very excited that Uzbekistan has joined the IEC,” said the IEC secretary general and CEO Philippe Metzger. “By joining our global community, experts from Uzbekistan will be able to participate actively in the development of international standards and conformity assessment services, ensure that their needs are addressed and implement international best practices. This is a further step towards global collaboration.”

Uzbekistan has been part of the IEC community since October 2015 when it joined the IEC Affiliate Country Programme (ACP). As part of its participation in the ACP, Uzbekistan adopted 720 international standards at the national level and established its National Electrotechnical Committee (NEC) in 2019 with representatives from the public and private sectors, the IEC said in a statement.

“The use of standards enables our industry to increase their competitive advantage at the global level and helps to eliminate technical barriers to trade,” said Abdulloh Orifboev, who serves as the secretary to the IEC National Committee of Uzbekistan.

With the membership of Uzbekistan, the IEC now has a total of 89 members from around world in addition to the 85 countries participating in the ACP.
