Apple ‘planning to make its own displays’

Apple is reportedly planning to start developing its displays in-house, moving away from its dependence on tech partners like Samsung and LG.

According to the Bloomberg report, the tech giant hopes to begin manufacturing its own displays as early as 2024.

The report said that Apple’s first in-house displays would be for the highest-end Apple Watches “according to people with knowledge of the matter.”

The in-house displays will shift away from the current OLED technology to microLED, with Apple planning to bring the displays to other devices, including the iPhone, in the long run.

The move is part of broader push by Apple to bring more of its parts manufacturing in-house. For example, the company has already moved to making its own chips for Mac computers, dropping a long-standing partnership with Intel.

It has also been developing its own 5G modem for future generations of the iPhone, but was recently forced to ask Qualcomm to provide the modem for the next iPhone after its in-house development hit a snag. The microLED displays will be Apple’s first screens fully designed and developed in-house.

It currently sources screens from a number of companies including Japan Display, Sharp, BOE Technology as well as Samsung and LG.
