How a paintbrush helps test smartphone cameras

In this video the benchmarking company DXOMARK reveals a unique smartphone camera test setup using a collage of different objects.

In the test setup a smartphone is placed on a rig in front of a board with a number of different objects affixed to it.

These objects, which include paintbrushes and paints, photos, rulers and a five dollar bill, are selected to help DXOMARK measure the camera’s ability to capture certain intrinsic aspects of image quality including color, texture, exposure and noise.

The smartphone rig shakes to imitate handheld movements and the camera is tested under different lighting conditions and focal ranges. A total of 750 images are captured for each test conditions with AI used to evaluate some of the test metrics, DXOMARK.
