Virtual display among tech innovations at CES 2023

The Consumer Electronics Show, better known as CES, returns to Las Vegas this week with everyone and anyone from the tech industry showcasing the latest in design innovation.

The event, the biggest tech trade show of the year, runs from January 5th through January 8th and will see most of the big name tech companies in attendance.

CES 2023 promises a return to normality following the disruption of the last few years, with the organizers expecting attendance to return to somewhere near pre-pandemic levels.

While the event is billed as a trade show, CES is in many ways a celebration of tech companies R&D departments, with the event functioning as the world’s biggest showcase of new consumer electronics tech.

This year is no exception with the top tech companies vying with startups to have their latest innovations take center stage in the full glare of the world’s media.

One of the startups that has caught the attention of CET&D is Brelyon, an MIT spin-off, which is using the event to launch an OLED display for video conferencing featuring the world's largest-field-of-view. Known as the Brelyon Fusion, it is being billed as the world's first 8K desktop virtual display. The display uses the latest computational and lightfield expansion innovations to create an immersive VR-like experience without the need to wear a headset.

"Brelyon Fusion allows the blending of light to scale field-of-view in a new way that achieves multiples of resolution," said Barmak Heshmat, CEO and founder of Brelyon. "This kind of new lightfield expansion innovation really allows us to think of light as pieces of LEGO blocks that can computationally be built to create a more immersive screen."

Another product worth an honorable mention is the Ubiquity transmitter, a low cost RF power transmitter that enables wireless charging for electrical devices in the home.

The brainchild of Powercast, the product was singled out as a CES 2023 Innovation Award Honoree. The device can be used to wirelessly charge low-power devices such as electric toothbrushes, shavers, TV remotes and smart watches.

"Powercast's vision is to see a low-cost RF transmitter in every room in every house," said Charles Goetz, CEO at Powercast. "Much like Wi-Fi routers, a home will need multiple RF transmitters to provide enough RF coverage where convenient, contactless, 'set it and forget it' wireless charging becomes a reality. So, we slashed costs and are sharing our Ubiquity design via a reference design with a low $5 bill of material cost, or an embeddable module, that lets manufacturers easily incorporate RF transmitting capability into their own products to accelerate RF transmitter networks in homes."

Alongside these smaller tech companies, the big names in the industry are also here, with plenty of innovative products for us to marvel at.

Graphics card manufacturer Nvidia, for example, announced a new AI feature capable of upgrading blurry web video to 4K resolution.

HP, meanwhile, is using CES 2023 to launch Voyager Free 60 Plus, its first set of wireless earbuds that feature an optional touchscreen on the charging case.

Whilst Samsung are debuting a range of new Micro LED TVs, including an ultrawide monitor featuring a 57-inch display.
