UL’s UK lab to become 'largest of its kind’ in Europe

Global testing company UL Solutions has announced an expansion of its UK EMC and wireless testing lab that when complete will make it the largest test facility of its kind in Europe.

Already one of the largest EMC and wireless testing labs in the UK, the facility is located in the southern English town of Basingstoke.

The expansion to the site is already underway with the construction of additional anechoic chambers and testing equipment that have opened more capabilities for pre-compliance testing in the early phases of design, UL Solutions said.

Phase two of the laboratory expansion is set to be completed by Spring 2023, with the new laboratory space allowing testing and certification for lighting and appliance products as well as both safety and combined EMC-wireless testing for connected lighting and appliances products and systems.

When finished, the expanded site will be the largest independent specific absorption rate (SAR) test facility in Europe.

Besides the Basingstoke expansion, UL Solutions has also announced that it has become authorized as a third-party test house for smart home products using Matter, the Connectivity Standards Alliance's (CSA) newly released industry-unifying standard for smart home technology.

The authorization means that UL Solutions will be allowed to assess the performance and functionality of products against Matter specifications in select Asia, Europe and North America locations.

This new authorization is in addition to existing testing capabilities for Bluetooth®, Zigbee and Thread technologies, and allows UL Solutions to deliver testing solutions for manufacturers that develop connected smart devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) space.
