UL’s new Chicago office a return to its roots

UL Solutions has opened a new office in downtown Chicago, the same city where the testing and certification company was originally founded.

UL said the new location in downtown Chicago underscored the company’s historic commitment to the city where it was begun by the electrical engineer William Henry Merrill in the early 20th century.

The approximately 40,000-square-foot office space inside the 46-story 155 N. Wacker Drive building in downtown Chicago increases the company’s footprint in the US Midwest with the company’s headquarters located in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook.

“Our new, vibrant downtown Chicago office is our latest demonstration of UL Solutions commitment to serving our customers’ needs wherever they are and we are truly excited to return to our historic roots, helping support our region’s major developments and projects facing complex safety needs,” said Jennifer Scanlon, UL Solutions president and CEO.

“Expanding our Midwest footprint in Chicago from our suburban headquarters in Northbrook will enable key stakeholders here to have direct local access to UL Solutions’ world-class safety science expertise.”

The new Chicago site complements UL’s 110-acre campus in Northbrook. The Northbrook campus has been the headquarters for UL for 44 years. In the year before then the company was located in downtown Chicago, a site it occupied since its founding in 1905.

"I invite the business community to join me in welcoming UL Solutions into the city,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. "Thank you, UL Solutions, for betting big on Chicago and recognizing that here your company can best access talent and workforce, existing and emerging customers, and the region’s incredible tech, innovation, and science ecosystem.”
