Samsung settles $78 million court battle over display patents

Samsung has agreed to a settlement with an Irish patent-licensing company that accused the electronics giant of infringing its patents for OLED displays.

Solas OLED Ltd first sued Samsung in 2019, claiming that Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and other products infringed its display patents.

Last year a court in Texas awarded more than $63 million, which was later increased by $15 million in enhanced damages.

Samsung later won rulings invalidating parts of both patents and sued Solas last year for alleged violation of a settlement between the companies.

In a complaint entered in a Manhattan court Samsung said that Solas and another Irish patent-licensing company, Neodron Ltd, had allegedly breached a settlement agreement by suing it for infringement.

A filing earlier this month in Texas seems to have brought the case to an end, however, with both parties agreeing to dismiss the case with prejudice, which means it cannot be refiled.

Terms of the agreement were not made public and neither of the companies has offered further comment.
