Samsung reveals design secrets behind new smart projector

Samsung has opened up on the development process for its new smart projector, the Freestyle.

The electronics giant lifted the lid on “the design story” behind the portable screen and entertainment device in a post on its website.

“We worked on creating a form that can accommodate all kinds of usage and placement styles,” said Chulyong Cho, one of the Freestyle’s designers.

As such the laser projector has been designed to be highly portable, does not require any type of fastening and can be adjusted to be used at any angle. This versatility is also reflected in the device’s cradle which allows for rotation of up to 180 degrees, meaning users can project video to almost any surface whether its tables, floors, walls or even ceiling.

The Freestyle’s versatility doesn’t end there however, as it can also be transformed into a mood lamp. While the Freestyle’s translucent lens cap can be used to project images as a form of mood lighting.

“We aspired to create a device capable of matching the lifestyles of all kinds of people and preferences,” said fellow Samsung designer Minsun Kang.

The laser-based device has also been designed for ease of use. If users are projecting at an angle, for example, the Freestyle will automatically optimize the projection, focusing and leveling out the projection without the user needing to intervene.

The design team also wanted to ensure the product could be used in many different environments. Consequently, the projector is fully portable thanks to an external battery pack that supports USB-PD and 50W/20V output or above, and is available in a range of color options for users to pick and choose from.

The Freestyle was unveiled earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
