Samsung QD-OLED tech honored by display industry

Samsung has won the ‘Display of the Year’ award from the respected display industry body the Society for Information Display (SID) for its QD-OLED technology.

QD-OLED, which was developed by Samsung Display – Samsung Electronics’ display business, is the industry’s first self-emissive display embedded with quantum dots.

Samsung was given the award as part of the Display Industry Awards (DIA), which SID has been running annually since 1995 to honor products that have advanced display technology.

Samsung’s QD-OLED technology has been greeted with many plaudits since it was launched last year, winning the CES Innovation Award back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 and the ‘People’s Choice Award’ at SID Display Week 2022.

The Display of the Year honor goes to the most innovative display product from the past year.

“QD-OLED enabled accurate, consistent, true-to-life color perfection by introducing quantum dots, which are advanced nanoscale materials that emit precise wavelengths of light, to a blue self-emitting pixel structure and an oxide thin-film transistor,” said SID, which is hosting its annual Display Week event in California this week. “QD-OLED is a combination of best material science, color cognitive science and physics to deliver remarkable color, stunning detail and an immersive viewing experience.”

Considered by Samsung Display its next-generation large-format technology, QD-OLED began mass-production in 2021 and made its market debut in 2022.

“It is a significant achievement for QD-OLED to be recognized by the industry’s most prestigious society as a display of the year award winner, just two years after its launch,” said Ho Sun, the head of strategic marketing for large display division at Samsung Display. “QD-OLED is the catalyst in shifting premium TV and monitor markets from LCD to self-emissive displays and drive market transformation.”
