Rohde & Schwarz honored for 6G test concept

Test equipment maker Rohde & Schwarz has won an innovation award for its test set-up for testing integrated joint communications and sensing (JCAS).

The test set-up received the GTI’s Innovative Breakthrough in Mobile Technology Award. The award is granted by the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), an alliance of leading global mobile operators that works to commercialize TD-LTE networks and services.

The award is given to technologies “based on how they meet GTI operator needs, as well as their innovativeness, benefits, market potential, sustainability and impact,” Rohde & Schwarz said in a statement.

Rohde & Schwarz's test set-up concept consists of the R&S AREG800A object simulator and R&S FE44S external frontends, and is a completely new lab test platform for JCAS technology verification.

According to Rohde & Schwarz, joint or integrated communications and sensing (JCAS/ICAS) is one of many 6G research fields around the world and can enhance existing applications, such as those in the automotive industry, or create new use cases in data communications and environmental sensing.

Rohde & Schwarz said: “JCAS can also detect, track, identify and create images of objects, events or the surroundings to improve communications performance. Overall efficiency is greatly improved since communications and sensors use the same spectrum and the signals are transmitted and received by the same hardware.”

The new test setup was debuted at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
