Report: OLED TVs to get brightness upgrade

A reported breakthrough in panel manufacturing is likely to usher in a new era of OLED TVs with much brighter output.

According to a report from TechRadar, one of the largest OLED panel makers Universal Display has said it is on target to commercialize phosphorescent blue emitters by the end of 2024.

According to TechRadar, blue emitters – alongside red and green emitters – are among the key components of OLED displays.

Panel manufacturers make two types of blue emitters - fluorescent and phosphorescent. Phosphorescent (PHOLED) emitters are capable of internal luminous efficiency four times greater than their fluorescent counterparts, making them much brighter.

While red and green PHOLED emitters are already used on OLED panels, up until now manufacturers have struggled to create stable blue PHOLED emitters.

Universal Display, which supplies its OLED panels to companies including LG and Samsung, is now close to perfecting the technology, with the development reportedly confirmed by Universal Display vice president Mike Hack in an interview with the Korean newspaper ETNews.
