Dr Volker Ziegler will take over from Dr Hans D Schotten, who headed the Information Technology Society within VDE (VDE ITG) for the past six years.

ITG is the oldest and largest technical society within VDE and will be celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1954  it is the German national association for professionals working in IT in business, administration, teaching and research and science. About 10,000 VDE members have assigned themselves to the ITG and more than 1,000 experts work voluntarily in the committees.

VDE Institute, meanwhile, is one of the largest technology organizations in Europe carrying out research, standardization, testing and certification.

Dr Volker Ziegler has been a member of the VDE since 1986 and took over as ITG deputy chairman in 2021. Ziegler, who has a senior position at Nokia, said he saw two key areas of activity for the technical society moving forward.

Ziegler said: "The focus is certainly on shaping the digital transformation, in particular the convergence of the physical and digital world. For example, this involves cloud-based networks, artificial intelligence, new wireless technologies and the use of new frequencies.

“We also need to correct the encrusted image that many people have of electrical engineering. This is the prerequisite for promoting the next generation of engineers.”

Dr Jörg-Peter Elbers will take over Ziegler’s vacated role of deputy chair.
