OLED use ‘to expand across consumer electronics’

Demand for OLED panels is set to grow in the next decade with the biggest spike in their use likely to be in laptops and tablets, a new report says.

According to the report by the technology research group Omdia, the use of OLED technology in the mobile PC category – which includes laptops, tablets and e-readers – is forecast to grow 34 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) by 2030.

This is compared with an overall growth of 11 percent CAGR from 2022 to 2030.

The report said that major brands are gradually adopting OLED panels in their premium lineups for TVs, smartphones and other consumer electronic including notebooks and tablets.

The forecast growth follows a dip in demand in 2022 and 2023 following the impact of COVID-19.

However, OLED use in smartphones has expanded as tech companies have begun to move from using it only in premium phones to utilizing it also in entry-level models.

According to Omdia, OLED market share in the smartphone display market increased rapidly from 30 percent in 2020 to 42 percent in 2022. Omdia expect this share to rise steadily in the future.

Ricky Park, senior principal analyst for Omdia's Display research practice, said: "From 2024, Apple will adopt OLED in iPad Pro models in earnest, and as a result, we anticipate demand for OLED panels for mobile PCs will increase rapidly.

“In an optimistic scenario where Apple actively adopts OLED and its rivals follow suit, mobile PC OLED panel demand on an area basis is forecasted to grow at a 34 percent CAGR."
