OLED breakthrough could ‘double display brightness’

Japanese display maker Japan Display has unveiled a new way of making OLED screens that it claims will deliver twice the brightness of current screens.

Japan Display, which supplies smartphone displays to iPhones, says the technology, known as eLEAP, could appear in OLED screens as early as the end of 2022.

According to a report in OLED Info, OLED displays produced by eLEAP technology can achieve an aperture ratio of 60 percent, compared to a ratio of around 28 percent in FMM OLEDs. This means that the OLED displays produced in this way can be driven at lower currents - which extends the lifetime, improves the efficiency and also enables higher-peak brightness.

It would mean much less battery drain on smartphones, which could offer current brightness levels with much lower power consumption.

Meanwhile, Japan Display claimed that the lifespan of OLED panels would be prolonged by up to three times. Calling the technology a " historic breakthrough in display technology," the company said it plans to provide eLEAP to other display makers too.
