India ‘aims to become electronics repair capital’

India is hoping to take over China as the global center for electronics repair services, according to a new report.

The country recently launched a three-month pilot project to test electronics repair outsourcing with the participation of tech companies including Flex and Lenovo.

The Indian government aims to generate revenue of up to $20 billion and create millions of jobs over the next five years through outsourced repair services, according to a report in TechCrunch.

The country reportedly wants to overtake China and Malaysia, which currently dominate the market for repair outsourcing.

Taking about the pilot project, Ali Akhtar Jafri, director general of Indian IT and electronics manufacturer industry body MAIT, said: "It will enable the extension of device life globally by providing cheap and reliable repair of ICT [Information and Communications Technology] products for the globe."

The move comes as India tries to make itself a more attractive proposition for the tech companies to locate themselves.

Last September, for example, it announced plans to speed up the safety approval process for new consumer electronics.

The move, part of an Indian government effort to remove bottlenecks faced by businesses, could boost the launch of new smartphones by the likes of Apple and Samsung.
