IEC TC 61 publishes CMV standards

Commented versions (CMVs) of about 10 household appliance standards were released last month.

These included the ninth edition of IEC 60335-2-11, which specifies the safety requirements for tumble dryers, and the fourth edition of IEC 60335-2-97, which outlines the safety requirements for drives for shutters, awnings, blinds and similar equipment. Commented versions of standards, which identify the differences between the previous and the new forms, also provide remarks on each of the main technical changes.

As the number of household appliances grows and their complexity increases, the IEC has regularly updated the general safety requirements for these appliances in IEC 60335-1. A sixth edition of the standard was published in 2020 as a CMV and it was the first TC 61 Standard to adopt the new publication format.

IEC 60335-1 protects against many types of hazards such as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation when appliances are used under normal and “expected abnormal” conditions. It also takes into consideration how electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.

IEC Technical Committee 61 expert Michelle Andersen said: “We are currently updating all of our IEC 60335-2 Standards to the 2020 edition of the IEC 60335-1 Standard, which was our first CMV. This alignment work started in 2021 and we hope to complete it in 2024. This means we publish on average 20+ new editions each year.”
