Google foldable will have ‘the most durable hinge’

Google’s first foldable smartphone will have “the most durable hinge on a foldable” according to a recent report.

According to the CNBC report Google are set to announce the phone, understood to be called the Pixel Fold, at its annual developer conference in May ahead of a June launch.

CNBC reported that it had seen internal Google communications stating that the device will have the “most durable hinge on a foldable” phone and will cost upward of $1,700.

This is in the same price range as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, which retails at $1,799. According to CNBC, the phone will open like a book to reveal a small tablet-sized 7.6-inch screen, the same size as the display on Samsung’s phone.

The report gave no specifics on Google’s durability claims for its new foldable, for example how many folds the device could withstand during testing.

Samsung is reportedly testing its upcoming the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to survive 300,000 folds, with the company considering the phone to have passed the durability test if the hinge retains 85 percent of its original strength after 200,000.

Oppo’s recent foldables, including the Oppo Find N2, the Oppo Find N2 Flip, and the Honor Magic Vs, meanwhile, were all tested to survive 400,000 folds.
