Google, Deutsche Telekom partner in 5G trial

Google is set to trial a number of its 5G cloud services in partnership with German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom.

The deal will see the companies trialing Google 5G standalone (SA) service on Deutsche Telekom’s Austria operations, according to a report by SdxCentral.

This will allow the German operator to untether its 5G network from its legacy 4G LTE core.

As part of the deal Deutsche Telekom will also be testing Google Cloud and its Distributed Cloud Edge (GDC Edge) platform which support infrastructure and services closer to the end user.

Deutsche Telekom will also trial Google’s data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine-learning technologies. The deal with the European telecom company is part of Google’s ambitions to expand into the telecommunications business.

As part of this push, Google has already struck deals with Verizon and Bell Canada, who are already using the Google platform, as well as Vodafone, which is now using Google Cloud technology to update its pan-European networks, SdxCentral reported.
