Galaxy S22 Ultra display rated third best by DXOMARK

Benchmarking company DXOMARK has released its test results for Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy smartphone, ranking it alongside the iPhone 13 for display quality.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra (Exynos), which arrived on the market in February, was handed a display rating of 93, making it joint third-highest in the world alongside Apple's iPhone 13. The top-rated phones for display are the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, which score 98 and 99 respectively.

In a review published on their website DXOMARK noted the S22 Ultra’s display measured 1777 cd/m2 in brightness tests, making it the brightest smartphone display ever. The phone was given a readability score of 76 with DXOMARK noting that its record brightness allowed for “great visibility in sunlight.”

DXOMARK wrote: “Thanks to this, it shows strong improvement in readability under sunlight. And second, Samsung achieves the new top video score thanks to good brightness, proper tone mapping, and good color rendering.”

But DXOMARK found some limitations in the phone’s default brightness, which it said “is too low under indoor and shady outdoor conditions; and even though the Vision Booster feature makes detail easier to see in some images viewed under sunlight, it adversely impacts the color rendering in others.”

However, DXOMARK said that by lowering the device’s default brightness level in low-light conditions, “the S22 Ultra (Exynos) makes for more comfortable night reading, browsing the web, or enjoying social media than the S21 Ultra (Exynos), which was a bit too bright.”

The review also claimed that the phone’s handling of video frame drops was less good than its predecessor model, the S21 Ultra (Exynos).
