The webinar, entitled Navigating Compliance and Standardization of USB-Enabled Appliances, will take place on 5 November 2024. It will focus on the technical differences between different end-product applications and will discuss some of the open issues still under development within the relevant standards committees.
The emphasis will be on the IEC 60335 series of end-product safety standards for appliances, and its differences to other similar use end-product standards, such as IEC 62368-1 for Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment.
The webinar will provide attendees with:
• A summary of the development of USB technology, where it has come from and where it is evolving.
• An awareness of the current usages of USB in appliances.
• A detailed comparison of the technical differences between IEC 60335-1 and IEC 62368-1, and the related compliance challenges that arise.
• A summary of the regulatory interest in the use of USB.
• An overview of the real-world safety challenges still yet to be fully addressed by the relevant safety standards and summary of discussions taking place in the relevant standards committees.

Nicholas Jones has over 15 years of previous experience in compliance and approvals working for certification agencies and manufacturing, directly shaping both North American and IEC safety standards for appliances, batteries, and functional safety. He is currently Head of Delegation for the GBNC to IEC TC61 for the safety of appliances and acting convenor the national mirror committee.
