Apple Intelligence is free for users and will be available in beta as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this Autumn. Some features, software platforms and additional languages will come over the next year. The AI features will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later.
The company said Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance writing and communicate more effectively. With system-wide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, consumers can rewrite, proofread and summarise text almost everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages and third-party apps.
With Image Playground, users can create fun images “in seconds”, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration or Sketch. Taking emoji to a new level, original Genmoji can be created just by typing a description. To make searching for photos and videos more convenient, natural language can be utilised to search for specific images to “give users more control”.
Powered by Apple Intelligence, digital assistant Siri has also become more integrated into the system. Consumers can type to Siri and switch between text and voice to communicate with it, activating a light around the edge of the screen when the assistant is functioning. ChatGPT will also be integrated across Apple platforms.
Apple noted that a cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is on-device processing and many of the models that power it run entirely on a device. To run more complex requests that require more processing power, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock more intelligence, according to the company.
