Apple patents design for EMC test chamber

Tech giant Apple is known as an electronics pioneer, and it is now reportedly expanding its innovative eye into the area of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.

According to a recent report on the Patently Apple website, Apple has filed a US patent for an EMC test chamber.

The patent application was titled “Electromagnetic Shielding Testing Chamber with Ventilation,” was published by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

The application provides details for the design of a testing apparatus for electromagnetically sensitive equipment that includes housing to block the transmission of external electromagnetic waves and reduce the reflection of electromagnetic waves within the testing chamber.

The design also includes tubing for airflow between the interior of the testing chamber and the external environment. EMC test chambers are commonly used in the development of electronics products to test potential interference from other electronics.

As one of the biggest tech companies in the world, Apple uses EMC test chambers on a regular basis. It is not clear from the patent submission whether the EMC test chamber design would be something the company intends to use only for in-house product testing or whether it plans to commercialize the design.
