Amazon to host speech and audio workshop in Slovakia

Amazon will host an upcoming workshop in Bratislava looking at standards relating to the quality of emerging services for speech and audio devices.

The event, which will take place at Amazon’s facility in Bratislava, has been organized by the ETSI, the European standards organization for telecommunications, broadcasting and other electronic communications networks and services.

The workshop will look at emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, as well as innovations in 5G Network Slicing that are making it necessary to refine the technical approaches and related standards on network performance assessment and quality of service bench-marking.

The workshop will also consider technical innovations and new standards in prediction of perceived quality of speech and audio communications systems, including listening effort, loudness and echo perception.

“This workshop is a unique opportunity for industry, universities, standards organizations, operators and service providers to discuss latest trends and developments in all fields of speech and audio.” said Scott Isabelle, principal solutions engineer at Amazon Alexa, who also chairs ETSI’s technical committee on speech and multimedia transmission quality (TC STQ).

The event, entitled “Quality of Emerging Services for Speech and Audio: A user-centred perspective,” is inviting presentations on a number of related topics including acoustic and audio aspects of evaluating the performance of smart home and IoT devices, and on signal processing differences between human perception and automatic speech recognition.

Hans Gierlich, head of the telecom division at HEAD acoustics and vice chair of TC STQ, said: “This workshop has quite some tradition the first one was held in 2005. All workshops have been targeted to actual topics and were always highly acknowledged by the participants”.

The workshop takes place November 21-22. For more information visit here. Meanwhile, those interested in presenting at the event can fill in a form here.
